11 Female Anglers Rocking The Sport in Singapore #GHLadiesInFishing

In the scene that is often dominated by guys in Singapore, we'd thought it might be a great exercise to shed some light onto the ladies that have been kicking ass over the past years, out-fishing and outdoing so many of us!

After amassing help and input from all around the interwebs, with special thanks to Jia An and Eat Sleep Fish Singapore, here's in no particular ranking/order....

11 Female Anglers Rocking The Sport In Singapore:

#1 Zoey Koh, Staff at Fishing Buddy

How did you get into Fishing:

I started basic fishing in 2011. Back then, it was just a past time with friends every other weekend. My perspective on fishing changed after I joined Fishing Buddy, where I learnt alot of professional fishing techniques and skills. With guidance from my fellow team anglers, I've gained new knowledge and experience.

Nowadays, Fishing to me is no longer just a casting and waiting game. It's a professional sport that requires ample knowledge, preparation and hunting skills. The choice of gear can plays such an important role in determining a successful trip!

Why do you love it:

Why not? What's not to love about fishing?

I love the bonding and teamworks amongst the group, the thrill of hooking up to a solid fight, the excitement of not knowing what species I caught at the other end of the line and the sense of accomplishment when I land the fish!

The list goes on... :)

Favourite Lures/Bait:

Any lure/bait I can use that successfully catches my target fish automatically becomes my favourite for the day! I try not to play favourites because there's always a use case for everything - no specific bait/lure will always work on every fishing ground!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

I'm super proud of all my catches, because they came from my own persistence, determination and of course my passion!

#2: Wan Yi Xuan, Sales Rep at Lure Haven

One of the most easily recognisable faces for anglers in Singapore, our favourite Lure Haven staff is so popular she once broke the internet for Fishing Kaki by simply appearing in one of their community posts! I kid.

How did you get into fishing:

I fell in love with Fishing during my first visit to Auntie Pond, and got addicted ever since. Thankfully I got introduced to work at Lure Haven via a friend - nowadays I fish 3 to 5 times weekly on a regular basis!

Why do you love it:

It's all about enjoying the outdoors, discovering new tactics & techniques to land fishes and most importantly, meeting people! Some of the most interesting people I know are anglers :)

Favourite Lures/Bait:

My favourite lure is the O.S.P soft plastic range, especially the Shadtails 3.1. They are very easy to work with proven results (just check out the different catch reports online!). Pro tip: Try out the ones with different scents/texture to land your next biggie!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

This giant grouper that I caught while using the Jackall Veyron in a pond somewhere in Malaysia. Landed it in about 10mins after some coaxing out from the structure -> my proudest catch!

#3: Lala "Lalagonefishing", Blogger and Supplier

Lala1

Only known via her alias "Lalagonefishing", Lala is a one time fishing blogger who currently keeps herself busy doing small scale supplying for online shops in Indonesia.

How did you get into fishing:

I'll have to credit my dad! He used to go harpoon fishing back when I was a kid, and introduced the sport to me. After catching my first Peacock Bass at a Chinese Garden, I've have been hooked on ever since!

Why do you love it:

The thrill of exploring new places, trying new techniques, different lures & colors, and twitching methods. I get so much satisfaction when I know I bluffed the fish with my artificial bait.

Favourite Lures/Bait:

For affordability, I choose Strikepro Dwarf Minnow! My favourite color is white :) Another lure I love that is slightly more expensive is the Yo-Zuri Surface Cruiser 28g - Casts far and allows for easy walk the dog action!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

I lost most of my pictures! :( Here's a grouper:

#4: Nance Lah, Freelance Graphic Designer & Fishing Event Organiser

The "da-jie" of FIS (Fishing in Singapore), one of the largest online fishing communities on Facebook. Never fails to inspire with her passion for fishing!

How did you get into fishing:

Since I was young! My dad was a fishing fanatic himself - he had a boat. We spent almost every weekend either on the boat, on an island or by the beach. My dad believed that an evening fishing will take away all my examination stress, haha!

Why do you love it:

So many reasons, but here are some of them:

  • It reminds me of the good ol' times I had with my dad

  • Love how my mind can just go blank and relax whenever I'm at the beach out out at sea! I just let my mind wander with the sound of the waves, the breeze and suddenly the shock of a bite at the end of the line just makes all my thoughts go "POOF"! Haha :)

  • The thrill and the adrenaline rush of tugging the line with the fish and nature.

  • You'll never know what to expect! Expect the unexpected :)

Favourite Lures/Bait:

No particular favourite! I usually just go along with the type of fishing I'm doing... most important thing for me is to be out there fishing!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

Too many! But I'd love to share this 24kg Cobia caught on my very first Kuching trip. What a welcoming gift from Kuching!

#5: Elim Chew, Entrepreneur

A household name amongst entrepreneurs in Singapore, Elim is the popular lady boss most famous for her retail chain 77th Street. She's currently involved in FASTFAST, doing 90 mins courier deliveries, which she hopes can one day deliver fresh fish to households in Singapore thru FastFast Delivery!

Did you know beyond her interests in startups, social good and mentoring the next generation - she's also an avid angler?

How did you get into Fishing:

It was Christmas Day, and I was having breakfast at the Bistro Garden Asia Cafe in Kranji when my friend Kenny mentioned that there is a pond (Auntie's Pond) that's open for fishing next door.

Since it was something I've always wanted to try we went ahead with it....Only to score zero after 4 hours!

As an entrepreneur and a goal getter, I couldn't take no fish as an answer. After getting some tips from the owner's daughter Veron that the best timing is around first light when they open at 8am, I woke up at 6am two days later to drive all the way from the East Coast to Aunties Pond. Hardwork paid its dues, and I finally got my first catch - a 4 kg Sea Bass!

Did I hook the fish, or did it the fish hook me? I got addicted to fishing ever since!

Why do you love it:

I like how you never know what could be at the end of your line. I think I love the combination of the sheer thrill in landing a fish, and the intrigue towards the technical skills required. It's not just about throwing a line and baiting! When I learnt more and got exposed to luring - a whole new world opened up for me. So much to learn!

I've also made many good friends through fishing:

Soon after landing my first catch I met Doris Toh from Sure Catch World at the Asean Business & Investment Summit 2014 where she was receiving an award. She introduced me to her products, from ATC to Zerek - and I share in her pride that these are all Singaporean brands!

Later on I was also introduced via a friend Doreen Tan (co-founder of Best World International) to her son Stephan and the team from Lure Haven - Kelvin Lee, Sherwin Tay and our very own Singaporean Fishing Legend Bone Lim!

(In image top left to bottom right: Mark lim, Doris Toh, YY Low, Ivan StoneSolid, Bone Lim, Lewis ANG and Herman Tay - All my good friends in Fishing)

Favourite Lures/Bait:

I fish every weekend at D'Boat & D'Best at Pasir Ris Town Park. Lures/bait wise, I just take advice and learn from all my Shifus!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

Two full days and a thousand casts later - finally landed my first ever Toman under heavy cover terrain. Thanks to Rob Chang for being my guide at Sepayang Dam Wild Toman Fishing!

#6: Michy Ong, HR Professional

Michy

How did you get into Fishing:

I used to think that fishing is super boring! All they do is bait and wait, so didn't understand why my boyfriend liked fishing so much. It wasn't until much later when he explained that he does luring, and the difference between that and baiting did I begin to understand.

After spending some time doing research on Youtube looking at various luring videos from all around the world, I decided that it wasn't a meaningless activity thing after all! Went along with my boyfriend on one of his next fishing sessions and had never looked back since!

Why do you love it:

Only thing I can say is that I've found my passion! ;D

Favourite Lures/Bait:

I like using rubber frogs and minnow lures! Mainly what the boyfriend recommends, I trust his judgement :)

Catch that you are the most proud of?

My proudest catch would be this Mekong Catfish! Can't say it was a great fight because it's all about using alot of brute strength! I was exhausted at the end of the day but it was such a great experience for me. Super fun!

#7: Rybina Sim, Nurse

How did you get into Fishing:

Seeing my dad go for his regular fishing trips first sparked of the interest in me to pickup fishing when I was a kid. However, he wasn't awfully supportive back then and didn't allow me to do any fishing as I was a girl!

What?! I know right.... because of that I was determined to try when I got older. Fast forward several years, I finally got to try it at Pulau Ubin. An uncle who was also fishing there taught me how to pole fish - we used Hermit Crabs as bait on a line and hook!

After that I tried Eging in Thailand and eventually got into learning the basics of Fishing proper over the years with my friends.

Why do you love it:

I like how thrilling it gets when you finally land a fish with your best effort put in. The sense of achievement is fantastic, and the best thing about nature is that you can always expect surprises :)

Favourite Lures/Bait:

I like using rubber lures! No particular brand or model, I just get the ones I think are cute. They seem to work for me!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

#8: Fiona Lim, Sales Admin Assistant

How did you get into Fishing:

My Husband loves Fishing! I started to learn more about the sport, the techniques and tactics in order to spend more time with him :)

Why do you love it:

Fishing is amazing! It teaches me patience, how to appreciate the moment of peace in mind and the enjoyment that comes from fighting and landing our prized catches. Most importantly I'm able to spend more time with my partner, doing things we love together.

Favourite Lures/Bait:

In the beginning, I preferred to bait as I wasn't very good with casting and luring seemed an entirely new ball game. When I finally started to lure though, and landed a fish on a popper it completely changed my mindset - love it now :)

Catch that you are the most proud of?

My first fish (KBL) caught on the River2Sea Popper in White in Thailand! The fight only took about 5 mins, but the top water take was exhilarating, and had this unforgettable boom sound effect. Definitely a great experience!

#9: Jehm Jasmine, Veterinary Nurse

A veterinary nurse by training, Jasmine deals with all kinds of animals ranging from fluffy mammals to terrapins with ease daily. No wonder them fishes don't faze her!

How did you get into fishing:

I used to hangout alot at a fishpond owned by a relative when I was just a kid. Activities like walking on narrow path planks, harvesting from giant nets and catching tilapia near the edge of the pond are all fond memories of my childhood! I still remember that my very first rod was a $20 rod & reel (toman brand) setup purchased from Uncle Henry's Sincere Tackle shop.

Why do you love it:

Before fishing, I'm was a very impatient person who couldn't stand waiting for anything. Fishing taught me the importance of being patient, and also allows me to clear up my mind and enjoy an moment of peace every now and then. When I fish, I also enjoy the time spent with close friends, chatting about life while we wait for the bite.

Favourite Lures/Bait:

My favourite lures are those cute ones that I've never ever used! To me, lures are more for collection (they look so real!) - I own lures that are made to imitate mouses, iguanas, goldfish and red eye tree frogs.

To be honest, I prefer baiting - the smellier the bait, the better! (Think foul smelling prawns, chicken hearts and livers) Hahaha :)

Catch that you are the most proud of?

It has to be my Florida Alligator Gar from FW3. The best fight I've ever had was also a 3kg GT that left my hands trembling back when Kyoto Haven was around.

#10: Kim Yeo, Administrative Professional

How did you get into Fishing:

I was introduced to it by my spouse, who is pretty into in!

Why do you love it:

I can get to see fishes in the water swimming, and be one with the greenery, the environment and feel peaceful. When I get fish on, I enjoy the fight and strength of the fishes. It's a great way to spend precious time with my spouse and have a great workout at the same time!

Favourite Lures/Bait:

Like many others, I started off first with baiting. Most of the time I fell asleep while waiting! Only recently when I got into luring on the baitcaster did I start to feel that its so much more fun and challenging! If I had to pick, I'm definitely more into luring :)

Catch that you are the most proud of?

#11 Wenna Tay, Marketer at SureCatch World

How did you get into Fishing:

I started out when I got into the company (SureCatch World), reason being that I needed to learn more about the products in order to market them. The interest grew over time!

Why do you love it:

My reasons for liking fishing could be different from most. To me, progression is the thing that matters to me more than the catch at the end of the day. Every fishing experience allows me to learn and gain new skills, having fun and living an adventure!

Favourite Lures/Bait:

Zerek Live Flash Minnow Wriggly!

Catch that you are the most proud of?

I have a few, but I'm most proud of this one!
